India tech salary benchmarks for product companies (2026)
What product companies are actually paying for engineering, data, AI, and product talent across India's six tech hubs in 2026. These bands come from D4hire searches over the last 18 months and conversations with hiring managers we partner with. Treat them as directional, not absolute — every search has its own dynamics.
Headline trends for 2026
Cash growth has moderated from the 2021–22 boom but hasn't reversed. AI-adjacent roles command a 20–30% premium over equivalent non-AI roles. Senior hiring at the staff/principal level has gotten more competitive, not less, because the supply of true senior engineers grows slowly.
GCC pressure on local startup comp is real and increasing. When a US-headquartered company starts hiring senior engineers in Bangalore at ₹1Cr+ TC, every local startup hiring at that level feels the pull.
Frontend / Backend / Full-stack — by seniority
These bands are for product companies (not service/IT companies) in Bangalore. Hyderabad runs about 10–15% below; Pune/Chennai about 15–20% below; Mumbai is close to Bangalore for fintech, slightly below for SaaS.
- Junior (0–3 yr): ₹14–28L base
- Mid (3–6 yr): ₹28–55L base
- Senior (6–10 yr): ₹55–95L base
- Staff (8–12 yr, deep specialisation): ₹90L–1.5Cr base
- Principal (10+ yr, strong track record): ₹1.4–2.4Cr base
DevOps / SRE / Platform
Strong DevOps and SRE engineers run roughly parallel to backend bands, with a slight premium for senior platform engineers who have run high-scale production systems.
Senior SRE/DevOps (6–10 yr): ₹60L–1.1Cr. Staff (8–12 yr): ₹1–1.6Cr. The premium widens for engineers with deep Kubernetes, distributed systems, or specific cloud (AWS/GCP) expertise at scale.
Data, ML, AI
AI/ML adds a 20–30% premium across the board, more for genuine senior depth.
- Data Engineer (3–6 yr): ₹30–60L · (6–10 yr): ₹60L–1.1Cr
- ML Engineer (3–6 yr): ₹40–75L · (6–10 yr): ₹75L–1.4Cr
- Staff ML Engineer: ₹1.2–2Cr
- AI Researcher (publication record): ₹1.5Cr+ for senior, highly variable
- MLOps Engineer: tracks senior ML Engineer with 10% premium (supply is tight)
Product and Design
Senior PMs (6–10 yr) at funded product companies in Bangalore land at ₹60L–1.1Cr base. Senior Designers (6–10 yr) at ₹50L–90L. Design Leads / Head of Design roles can exceed ₹1.2Cr at scaled product companies.
Design and PM bands have lower variance than engineering bands; the spread within a seniority level is narrower.
Equity benchmarks for startups
Equity grants at venture-backed Indian product startups in 2026, for non-founding hires:
- Pre-seed / Seed: founding engineer (employee #1–3) 0.5–1.5%, early engineers (#4–10) 0.2–0.5%
- Series A: senior engineer 0.1–0.3%, staff engineer 0.2–0.5%, Engineering Manager 0.15–0.4%
- Series B: senior engineer 0.05–0.15%, staff 0.1–0.25%, VP Engineering 0.5–1.5%
- Series C+: bands tighten significantly; cash dominates total comp
The GCC pressure on local startup comp
Global Capability Centres in India in 2026 are not the cost arbitrage shops of a decade ago. The major GCCs hire at near-parity with local Series-C product startups for senior roles, and offer the stability of a US-public-stock RSU package on top.
Local startups competing for senior engineers have to compete on equity story, mission, and ownership — because they will lose on cash and stability against a well-run GCC almost every time.
How we use these benchmarks in real searches
Every D4hire intake starts with a comp band conversation. We bring our current benchmarks; the client brings their internal range; we compare and decide where the search can land. If the band the client has in mind is more than 20% below market for the seniority they want, we'll say so upfront.
Doing this early is the difference between a 3-week and a 10-week search.
